Do you need to ‘Ground’ or ‘earth’ your bed? The amount of pseudo-science mumbo-jumbo written about the need to ‘ground’ or ‘earth’ your bed is amazing if it were not so worrying, for example one ‘expert’ claims that autism can actually be predicted based on the EMF levels of your sleeping quarters while you are pregnant and that if you sleep in strong electromagnetic fields during pregnancy, your child will likely begin to exhibit neurological abnormalities within the first two years of life, such as neurological dysfunction, hyperactivity and learning disorders. Of course this ‘study’ has not been published in any scientific or medical journal and has no validity at all. Many earthing or grounding advocates cite the Schumann resonances as proof that their product or service is rooted in science. However the Schumann resonances are the name given to the resonant frequency of the Earth's atmosphere, between the surface and the densest part of the ionosphere. Therefore it is not the inherent frequency of the earth and has nothing to do with life or health or indeed anything else, it is merely an artefact of the physical dimensions of the space between the surface of the Earth and the ionosphere. However what is claimed is that the Schumann resonances has a frequency of 7.83 Hz at that this frequency is close to the frequency of the alpha wave of the Electroencephalograph (EEG) (actually alpha has a frequency of between 8-15 Hz) however whilst alpha is the brain waves associated with relaxation, (it is produced the moment you close your eyes) it is actually the disappearance of alpha from the EEG that indicates sleep and deep slow wave sleep actually has a frequency less than 4hz. So even if the Schumann resonance had any effect on the body, which it doesn’t, and if it were the inherent frequency of the earth, which it isn’t, it would not have anything to do with helping you get better of deeper sleep. “Have you ever noticed that you sleep better on a beach vacation after walking in the sand or being in the ocean? The sand and ocean water and both naturally conductive materials and both help ground the body and remove excess positive electrons”. Or a more plausible explanation is that you are on holiday; relaxed, stress-free, exercising in the sea air and sunshine, happy and having enjoyed good food and wine and so this is why you would sleep better. From a scientific and medical perspective there is no need to ‘ground’ or ‘earth’ you bed, of course to do so will cause you no harm, other than to you wallet.
